Event description | The Australian Orienteering Carnival consists of 7 events over 9 days. For those in the ‘could be a champion’ class, the Australian Orienteering Championships in the Sprint/Middle/Long formats are open to orienteers of any nationality; for those who are not-so-competitive or social orienteers concurrently there will be easy courses and A-grade shorter courses at every event. Midweek we have the Bathurst 3-day (with just 2 days out of 3 to count, which gives you the option for two consecutive rest-days to make a side trip). |
Terrain description | The Aus Middle/Long/Relays Championship events will be held in the Hill End Historic Site National Park (81 km north of Bathurst) which has detailed gold mining terrain with heavy erosion gullies coursing through wide areas of spur/gully terrain (23 sq.km has been mapped by Alex Tarr, Australia’s most experienced mapper). The Aus Sprint Champs will be held in Bathurst at Charles Sturt University, also never before used for orienteering. Day 1 of the midweek Bathurst 3-Day will be held in Roseberg State Forest 82 km south-west of Bathurst near Mandurama on a new section of map adjacent to an area used some years ago, with open spur/gully eucalypt forest and some complex granite rock. Day 2 of the Bathurst 3-Day goes back to Bathurst for a sprint event at a large boarding school. Day 3 of the Bathurst 3-Day is to be held in Macquarie Woods 33km west of Bathurst, in a mix of varying maturities of pine forest and open eucalypt forest with some complex granite. |

Holiday activities, nature, hiking etc. | There is a very wide range of activities for international visitors. In the weeks before our carnival, several eastern states will be conducting their State Orienteering Championships (email for more details). The Australian Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships will be held south of Sydney the week after our carnival. Bathurst lies 210km west of Sydney and the journey traverses the World Heritage Greater Blue Mountains Area, ideal as a scenic and hiking stopover. Bathurst and Hill End both developed rapidly in the 1850's with the discovery of gold and Bathurst maintains an architectural heritage reflective of this (today it is a farming rural centre and university town). Hill End on the other hand, could be described now as a ghost town even though it is the site of the largest gold nugget find ever, 286Kg. Bathurst abounds with galleries and museums (e.g. the National Motor Racing Museum, Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum, Bathurst Regional Art Gallery). Hill End has a strong art community (the reason Russell Drysdale's famous painting of the Golden Gulley that is on our map, is part of our webpage banner). Hill End also has national park walks (embargoed until after our carnival), tours of a gold mine, an extensive historic museum on all aspects of living in a goldfields town. The week after our Carnival, Bathurst hosts the 'Bathurst 1000 V8 Supercars' race series. Just over 2 hrs drive further west is the world famous Taronga Western Plains Zoo in the City of Dubbo - yet another worthwhile overnight visit. |
