Event descriptionThe attraction of Kainuu Orienteering Week (KOW) is being based on experiences which can only be offered by the unique orienteering terrain, rich culture and clean nature of Kainuu area. Kainuu Orienteering Week is an annual, international orienteering event which is being held in Kainuu province, Finland. With reflecting the Finnish traditions Kainuu Orienteering Week is the second oldest orienteering week in the world and it has been held as many as 51 times. The event gathers around 5000 to 10,000 orienteers annually which makes it one of the most popular sports events in Finland.
Terrain descriptionTerrain The competition terrain is one of best terrains in Kainuu region. Orienteers will be running in the fast and beautiful moor terrain of Tipasoja-Huhtikangas. Partly the same area was used in the WOC/KOW2013 event. The highest altitude variation is 60 meters. In certain areas the curves are with small features. The forest consists almost exclusively of pine forest of varying ages. The visibility is mostly very good, in some seedling areas slightly poorer. Ground is solid and clean; it is not stony. A few mires and ponds bring their own contribution to the orienteering tasks and landscape. The area has a comprehensive trail network. The most typical for the orienteering area are esker of Selkämäki (altitude variation about 60 meters), bigger and smaller kettles, little ponds with very clear water, several older and newer trails and paths and very thin undergrowth of vegetation. We offer several different kind of tracks and themes for the tracks and themes for the tracks starting from long distance to more like middle distance. Maps are done by Mapline Oy, which was also the mapper company of WOC&KOW2013.
