Event description | Four races in three days: Middle, Long, Sprint, and Relay First three races are WREs. The Relay is for North American national teams to battle for the overall championship. Fun orienteering-related activities from Thursday night through Sunday. |
Terrain description | Middle and Long The geology of the Delaware Water Gap uplands is influenced by the rocks of the Shawangunk formation. It is an area of bedrock, bisected by the Delaware River, which flows several hundred meters below the mapped plateau, which includes sandstone, conglomerate, and some shale beds. Glaciated well after their formation, these underlying rock types are now visible in areas of small to moderate height cliff faces that can follow ridgelines for some hundreds of meters and in stream valleys. A few boulders will be found. In general, the long area is characterized by many parallel ridges, occasionally punctuated by deep ravines. The short area is much flatter, with more subtle contours. The vegetation is mixed. The competition areas are covered by at least 50% conifer forest, with the remainder mature deciduous forest where oak predominates. The conifer forest in the middle area has more juvenile forest that the other areas, resulting in lower visibility and slower runnability. The middle area’s deciduous forest, conversely, is very open. The deciduous forest in the long area has some areas of scrub oak, mapped as light green vegetation. The middle and long terrains have small areas of denser vegetation around meadows. Signs of civilization are disappearing. There is a limited trail network, and areas of stone walls, which are more extensive in the middle area. The long area has numerous watercourses, marshes, and ponds, and some beaver activity. The middle area has few substantial water features. Sprint and Relay The sprint and relay terrain is split between the PEEC campus and its. The campus buildings have somewhat basic geometry, but the campus itself has different regions which will present many of the conventional sprint route choice problems. The forest area is generally open, and is similar to the forest for the other stages. There will likely be a greater density of contour features than found in the other stages. |
Training possibilities | The competition area is just under 100 kilometers by car from the famous Surebridge Mountain and the other maps and terrain of the 1993 World Orienteering Championships. |
Holiday activities, nature, hiking etc. | The competition center is also just 100 kilometers, or 90 minutes driving, from the center of Manhattan, NYC. |
