Event descriptionEBORIENTEERS are delighted to invite you to the White Rose Orienteering Weekend 2008 - one of the longest established and most popular orienteering holiday breaks which offers three days of varied orienteering on excellent North Yorkshire terrain in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The White Rose is one of the few O weekends to offer an exclusive campsite for competitors and this is what makes the event an exceptional opportunity for a real orienteering holiday weekend in really great countryside. Other accommodation options are available including numerous guest houses, B&B's, fully serviced campsites and youth hostels. In 2008, the White Rose weekend will be based at Low North Park, a pleasant and secluded area of forest and heath in the Upper Derwent Valley. Close to the afforested scarps of Barns Cliff to the S – on the edge of Broxa Forest and Langdale Forest to the W, the area has been a popular orienteering venue for many years. Great forest terrain on Barns Cliff and Langdale as well as the surprisingly complex Low North Park will provide good orienteering over three days. The weekend includes various orienteering competitions including Regional Events on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August, then on Monday 25th August, a fast and furious team relay then later on Monday, a mountain bike score event. After last year’s success, we will again provide a night score event on Saturday evening making up the total of five separate O events in three packed days.
Terrain descriptionFrom its marshy source near Lilla Rigg on Fylingdales Moor, the infant Derwent passes alongside Langdale Forest and forms the boundary between the forest and the moor – the venue for the regional event on Saturday at White Rose 2008. The river passes close to the intended assembly location for the White Rose weekend in 2008 - before entering a narrow gorge N of the tiny community of Langdale End. To the E of the Derwent gorge lies the excellent forest terrain of Broxa Forest which, with the afforested scarp of Barns Cliff, will be used for the regional event on Sunday at White Rose 2008. To its W is the bare topped hill of Langdale Rigg. The event planners will provide more information over the next few months - so visit the website for more information.
