Event descriptionDuring these 27 years of collaboration, the Municipality of Requena has, in six editions, granted the title of “Trophy Ciudad de Requena” to the most relevant orienteering competitions. It is therefore significant to mention that the sport of Orienteering nationwide celebrates 25 years since that first edition of the Spanish League that took place on 10 and 11 April 1999. On this occasion, giving more quality to this event, the events will be taken into account for the “XIII Orienteering Trophy of the Valencia Regional Community which is organized by the CV Orienteering Federation – FEDOCV. Given the geographical situation of the venue, the actual terrain where the event will take place and the easy access from the race area to the near city make these 3 competitions such a special treat. More than 1.500 participants are expected from all parts, both national and international, ranging from the ages of 10 to 90. We are thus inviting you to participate in this first-rate event, which will, without doubt, discover to all the singularity of Requena, its territory and its woodlands, demonstrating the many possibilities of this area as to the practice of the Orienteering sport.
Terrain descriptionREQUENA is located in the largest and most western part of the province of Valencia and, compared to the rest of the near regions, enjoys very special traits: its climate, and its landscape. It is one of the largest municipalities of Spain, as it occupies 816 m2 and an average altitude close to 700 m above sea level. Its relief is bucket-shaped with mountains all around and its highest altitude is the El Tejo peak at 1.270 m. At the bottom of the bucket, there is a flatland slightly sloping from northeast to southeast ending in an abrupt depression that leads to the Gabriel river, the southwest frontier of the area. It is in these surroundings that we find the village of La Portera, limited to the south by the nearnest of the Natural Parc of the river Gabriel.
Holiday activities, nature, hiking etc.Today’s Requena has its origin in the Islamic period although, the fact that Iberian and Visigothic settlers would have lived there before, are not ruled out and there is evidence of Roman settlements. Its privileged location makes it a key to traffic and communications between the central area of Spain (meseta) and Valencia. The Islamic city, original core of Requena, is known as the “Barrio de la Villa”, fortified and marked with defensive towers and, within its limits, the fortress, later enlarged. The “Plaza del Albornoz” is of special interest. There, a series of caves that are under the plaza can be visited. There are also caves under many private homes.
