Event descriptionA special Orienteering event with 3 races in the arctic summer. The 28'th of June: Long Distance. The 29'th of June: Sprint in the town of Ilulissat. The night between the 30'th of june and 1'st of July: Midnight Race with 5, 10,15 and 20 km races. The midnight Race is an individual event with a touch of the extreme. It takes place in a very physically demanding terrain during the arctic night in a nearly deserted but grandiose scenery with no trees and a lot of bare rock. Head lamps are not needed due to the midnight sun.
Terrain descriptionThe terrain is situated at the city of Ilulissat with a view of the Kangia (Ilulissat Ice Fiord) and the Disko Bay. It is an open, hilly area with bare rock, stones or topsoil covered with moss, lichen, crowberry, heather and grass. At this time of the year there is daylight 24 hours per day. The temperature will normally be between +5 and +15 0 C. The maps are orienteering maps based on photogrammetry in scale 1:10,000 and 1:15,000. Contour interval is 5 meters.
Training possibilitiesThere are marked trails in the hills near the Icefiord for hikers but they can also be used for running so you can get used to the terrain. Each monday at 18.00 there is local orienteering training for club members and guests. In the capital of Nuuk there is an Orienteering Club NASP where you can participate in training and events. For Marathon runners there is a Midnight Sun Marathon in the nearby town of Aasiaat Friday the 23'th of June 2017.

Short race reportWe don't have a real race report but here are som quotes: Carol and John Pearce (AMO2005): "Was it worth it? YES... It is certainly one to be recommended to anyone with a sense of adventure and a taste for tough orienteering." Michel Besta SWE (AMO2011): "The Midnigt Run. The holly grail of orienteerng in Greenland. Mass start at 11 p.m. and one of the toughest ultra long distances I've ever run. The sun was still pretty high during the midnight. But after a nice weather at the start the fog came and made thenrace even harder.
