Event descriptionFin5 orienteering week is traditional orienteering week. The 2016 edition of the Fin5 Orienteering Week will take place in Hamina. Fin5 will offer unique orienteering experiences for every runner. Competition days are Sunday 10.7, Monday 11.7, Tuesday 12.7 (Sprint, only elite) Wednesday 13.7, Friday 15.7 and Saturday 16.7 (chase start, elite). The overall competition of the Fin5 orienteering week is determined according to points earned from each competition and the four best competitions will be taken into account. In the elite classes with obligatory pursuit competition on the last day.
Terrain descriptionTerrains are mainly pine forests with good visibility and runability. Hamina is part of rapakivi granite area which means some special long time breaking down on stones and cliffs. Therefore and also because of Ice Age, we do have a lot of stones and small knolls on map but surface under foot is not too stony. Mixture of hills, more detailed areas, marshes and greener areas offer different orienteering challenges. Finnish ultra-long championship 2015 was organized in Turkia on neighbour terrain. Main competition area was mapped and used last time on Jukola 1971. Also Jukola relays 2005 and 2011 nearby were good examples of terrains around Hamina. Terrain of Onkamaa is more flat but partly more detailed with fast open rock areas. Larger marshes and green areas do appear and offer good route choice challenges. City centre of Hamina offers exceptional sprint elements to elite classes: old wooden house yards, circular shape of city streets and parks with fortress bulwarks. Competition centre Hamina Bastion was central part of old fortress and it has been repaired for all kind of events. Bastion is covered the largest dismountable canopy in Europe.
