Event descriptionThe Scottish 6 Day returns to Moray in 2013, once again offering a mix of fantastic orienteering in a popular tourist location – Moray has it all including lovely beaches, wildlife, castles, whisky, woollens, shortbread and tartan. The event centre and campsite will be at the stunning National Trust for Scotland property Brodie Castle (between Nairn and Forres). There is a mix of quality seaside areas (Lossie, Culbin and Roseisle) plus three fantastic “inland” areas (Carse of Ardersier, Loch of Boath, Coulmony & Belivat). Day 4 will be a WRE Middle Distance event and plans are being made to incorporate Euromeeting with a Sprint race in Lossiemouth. Moray 2013 is a great chance to familiarise yourself with Scottish terrain in the run up to WOC2015 and Highland 2015, the next Scottish 6 Day. Just remember no orienteering in the embargoed areas!
Terrain descriptionLossie An intriguing mixture of intricate coastal dunes (some forested, some open) with a more subtly contoured inland area of open forest. There is an extensive path and road network giving good scope for the junior classes. The area is very runnable with no big climbs. Carse of Ardersier A series of low ridges with areas of complex detail won't make it easy! Visibility is generally very good. There is a good pattern of line features. Culbin The embargo for WOC will not prevent entrants at Moray using this part of this large, hugely popular and very runnable area. The landform features are generally larger than in the other coastal areas of Moray 2013 but with numerous areas of intricate contours. There is a good path network to form a base for junior courses. Loch of Boath Loch of Boath is the westernmost extent of a large area of forest and moorland that extends all the way to the A939 and beyond at Coulmony. The forest is a real gem, like the best of open runnable Speyside moraine areas, It has plenty of paths for junior courses and good technical terrain for everyone else. The area links up with Clunas, used in Moray 2003, and the runnable intricate forest known as Keppernach. Roseisle Backing a sweeping bay this area comprises dunes with mixed visibility and with flatter inland areas of variable runnability, but always a joy underfoot. There are ample line features for the less technical courses. Coulmony and Belivat Coulmony and Belivat were two small excellent areas, until now used only for local events. They have been joined with a previously unused band of detailed moraine running south east across what was once moorland but is now mixed vegetation all the way past Achagour to Loch Belivat then across the A939 to Lethen. The resulting map will provide a great technical challenge making a fitting end to the week.
Training possibilitiesTraining areas of similar character to both Moray 2013 and WOC2015 are currently being looked at and details will be made available. Access to areas and facilities at the National Orienteering Centre (near Aviemore) will be made available preceding and after Moray 2013.
Holiday activities, nature, hiking etc.The area is a popular tourist destination and noted for its dry and sunny conditions and no midges. There are lots of castles to visit, beautiful beaches, walking and cycling trails and great golf courses including Castle Stuart (one of the best in the world) and Nairn.
