Event description | This two day event is to be known as the Coalfields Classic. Three quality events will be contested across two days of competition. The first event will be an urban sprint on Saturday May 12, with starts from 9:00am. Saturday afternoon will see a middle distance event, with starts from 1:30pm. On Sunday May 13 a long distance event will be contested, with first starts from 9:30am. This long distance event is also a WRE. All three races are the final selection races for the Australian team to contest the WOC, Switzerland, later this year. Public races in all three event disciplines will also be offered. |
Terrain description | Sprint: At Newcastle University, a typical University campus. Intricate campus buildings linked by a complex path network - all within a unique natural bushland setting. Many regard the Newcastle University sprint map as close to the best in Australia. Middle: A new map created for this event. Classic Newcastle spur-gully terrain, gently undulating, with an intricate track network and patches of mining detail. Typical Newcastle vegetation variability. Good visibility and fast running, an ideal middle distance venue. Access to a unique and historical event arena courtesy of Richmond Vale Preservation Society. Long: WRE. Classic Newcastle spur-gully terrain, undulating, to steep in places. Intricate erosion gully detail and track network across the map. Significant variation in runnability due to vegetation changes. An ideal test of endurance and great venue for long distance competition. |
Training possibilities | No specific training possibilities have been planned. The Newcastle Orienteering Club offers a range of events throughout the year. Consult the website for 'Coming Events' in terrain similar to that utilised during this weekend of competiition. |
