Event description | The Scottish 6 Days is one of the most popular international multi-day events and has been held every two years since 1977. Lochaber hosted the Scottish 6 days in 2001, but 2021 promises to be a very different orienteering experience with some fantastic new areas. Subject to final permissions the event will start at Ardchattan, a scenic open area on the northern shore of Loch Etive before moving to a new area and Middle Distance race at Inverlochy, directly beneath the north face of Ben Nevis. Day 3 will take the Road to the Isles to Arisaig, with opportunities to continue the journey through Mallaig and out to Skye for a day trip. No decisions have yet been made on a Sprint Race (Fort William) but the main programme will recommence at Achnacarry (a new area), seat of the Chiefs of Clan Cameron with rugged terrain used for Commando training during WW2. The penultimate day will be up the glen towards Newtonmore and another great new area at Creag Dubh. The final day (Middle Distance) is on the National Nature Reserve at Creag Meagaidh, with outstanding views over the Ardverikie Estate, Loch Laggan and numerous Munros. The event centre (registration) is likely to take place in Fort William itself, a busy town with a wide range of accommodation types including chalet complexes around the Great Glen area. |
Terrain description | Four areas new to orienteering have been "discovered" in addition to two popular areas previously used at Scottish 6 days events. There is a wide variety of terrain types, but with more open moorland (with spectacular views) than previous events. Forested areas are primarily oak and birch but with some small areas of commercial forestry.. |
Training possibilities | There has been a lack of orienteering activity in the area for many years and many of the areas used in 2001 have been turned into matchsticks! There are training opportunites across Scotland including the Masterplan Adventure Coast and Islands event preceding Lochaber 2021. |
